Individual:
Occupation: Farmer
Rappahannock County, later Richmond, Virginia order book, 1686-1692, page 77, on April 4,1688 , William Coltson was granted a certificate for having imported 36 persons to Virginia, one of them being James Coward. This importation most likly happened before January 12, 1687 for on that date, James Coward was a witness on a deed for Mary Coolidge. Coward/Cowart Chronicles by Robert J. Robinson.
Old Rappahannock VA was formed in 1656. It was extinguished in 1692, to become Richmond an d Essex. In 1720 Spotsylvania County was formed from Essex, King and Queen and King William counties. In 1734 Orange Co. was formed from Spotsylvania, and in 1748 Culpepper was forme from Orange Co.
In 1792 Madison Co was formed from Culpepper.
The development of the Cowherd families centered around Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpepper and M adison Counties even though there began circa 1790 a western movement of the family notable to Kentucky, Missiouri and Kansas.
It has been impossible to construct a definite and authentic record of all the children of Ja mes Coward & Mary Collidge. Only those documented in the VA counties of Spotsylania and its successor counties of Orange and Culpepper are included. The children listed here may not be entirely correct or given in chronological order.
