Supposedly born Somers Point. He was told his mother died when he was born. There is no trace of a birth certificate nor a death certificate. He and Manuel lived with Evan & Hannah Jefferies in Bargaintown. After Manuel was lost at sea he continued living with them.

He was great at skating. People of the area who remembered him said he used to teach the children how to skate.

His health was always poor due to asthma. Apparently he had it as a young man because a grandson of the farmer he worked for (Sutton Farm Northfield) said he carried something he used to burn with him. After working on the farm he became a chauffer. It was said he chauffered the gangsters in Atlantic City in the old days.
