    Julius Bruyer, one of the thrifty and enterprising farmers of
    Fairview township, Clay county, was born in France. His father andmother, August and Josephine (Simon) Bruyer, were both natives of thatcountry and emigrated to America about a year after our subject wasborn. They lived in Chicago a year after arrival, then until 1858 inDubuque, Iowa, at which time they came to the territory of Dakota. Theelder Bruyer took up a homestead in what is now Fairview township,Clay county, where he settled with his family, and there he stillresides. Of a family of five children born to this our subject was the
    third, and first open his eyes to the light of day September 18, 1853.He was a member of the parental household until he was thirty-oneyears of age, at which time he was married to Miss Susanna Birgen, whowas born in Sac county, Wis., June 26, 1864. Her father and mother,Michael and Elizabeth (Decker) Birgen, are now residents of Chickasawcounty, Iowa, and of their family of ten children, Mrs. Bruyer was theseventh in order of birth. The ceremony which united the lives of oursubject and Miss Birgen was performed January 23, 1883, after whichthe young couple took up their domestic life on the farm where theynow reside. The estate consists of 569 acres, all improved and undercultivation, and on this Mr. Bruyer is carrying on a general farmingand stock-raising business. Mr. and Mrs. Bruyer are the parents of four sons, Phillip M.,
    Lawrence A., Elmer L., and Nicholas J., and the family are members ofthe Catholic church in Fairview township and regular attendants. Mr.Bruyer has held several of the township offices, is a popular man andis highly esteemed and respected by his many friends andacquaintances.Quality: 2

    Aged Lady of North Washington Succumbs After Illness of Only Two Weeks

    At the home of her son, Peter Birgen, near North Washington, on
    Tuesday, Nov. 28, 1905, occurred the death of Mrs. Michael Birgen,after an illness of two weeks of lung fever.
    The funeral was held from St. Mary's church in North Washington on
    Friday, conducted by Rev Fr. Probst.
    Deceased was a native of Germany born March 30, 1831. On August 13,
    1851, she was married to the husband who walked by her side for morethan fifty years, he having passed away a year ago. They came to HoneyCreek. Wis., and later removed to Beresford, S. D., where they livednine year. They then came to this county and made their home withtheir son Peter and wife.
    She was a mother of nine children -- Mrs. Anna Mettel of Wadena,
    Minn., Mrs. Mary Mockler of Vermillion, S.D., Mrs. Isabel Steuber ofPrarie du Sac, Wis., Mrs. Susan Bruyer of Kalispel, Mont., Mrs. KatieClemens of New Hampton, Lewis Birgen of Honey Creek, Wis., Matt Birgenof Beresford, S.D., and Peter Birgen of North Washignton. Onedaughter, Mrs. Katherine Diederich, deceased.
    All were present at funeral except Mrs. Bruyer.

    Mrs. Birgen was a good Christian woman and her long life was spent in
    doing good to her family and her neighbors. She enjoyed the true loveof her children and thus was repaid for all the sacrifices she madefor them. In the home of her son Peter she was cared for tenderly,lovingly, the son's daughter bestowing upon her a love equal to thatof an own daughter.
    The life of a grand and devoted mother has come to end, but her memory
    will always be held sacred to these children who are now in sorrow.

    Michael Birgen was born January 22, 1827, in Meisenberg, canton
    Mersch-Luxemberg, Germany. He grew to manhood in his native countryand in 1851, on August 13, he and Miss Elizabeth Decker were joined inmarriage, a union which was happy and which remained unbroken for morethan 53 years. Not many years after his marriage he and his wifesought a home in America, the land of opportunity, and located in Saukcounty, Wis., which was the family home for a number of years. In 1879he removed to Union county, South Dakota and in 1886 came to Chickasawcounty, and located on the present homestead in Washington township.He was the father of ten children, eight of whom with his lifecompanion survive him. The children living are Mrs. John Mettel, ofWadena, Minn.; Ludwig Birgen and Mrs. Isabell Steuber, of Sauk county,Wis.; Mrs. August Mockler of Clay county, South Dakota, Matthew Birgenof Beresford, South Dakota; Mrs. Susan Bruyer of Kalispel, Mont.;Peter Birgen of Washington township and Mrs. John Clemens of thiscity. He is also survived by 54 grandchildren and 5 greatgrandchildren.
    His death occurred on Sunday, July 17, 1904, after an illness
    extending over several months. The funeral was held Tuesday, July 19,1904, from the Catholic church in North Washington, Rev. FatherJungeman of Alta Vista officiating at the services.
    Michael Birgen was a man of sterling honesty and unshakable stability
    of character. He was a Roman Catholic in religion and a democrat inpolitics. He was a thrifty, frugal farmer and in his life timeaccumulated a considerable amount of property, leaving his aged wifeand his children well and comfortably provided for, an aim towardwhich he resolutely set his heart. He had lived out the allotted spanof life and his work was done. His passing away, while to be mournedby those near and dear to him, was but the fulfillment of God's andnature's law.
