The final summons which closed the earth life of Mrs. Patrick Merrigan
came Saturday morning at an early hour. She had been ailing for atime, but it was not known that the end was near until a few momentsbefore she breathed her last. Of sturdy Irish stock, the privationsincident to pioneer life in Dakota Developed all of her faculties, andshe was known as a woman of strong convictions.
Margaret Doyle was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, May 31, 1834. She
came to America with her parents when four years of age, and settledin Grant County, Wisconsin. She was united in marriage with PatrickMerrigan at Hazel Green, Wisconsin in 1853, and the two moved toGalena, Illinois where they resided until 1871, when they came toDakota and located on the homestead fourteen miles southwest of whereBeresford was afterward located. In 1889, Mr. Merrigan died, and in1897 she moved to town, where she lived in her own home until aboutthree years ago, when because of poor health, she broke up her homeand began living with her children.
Fourteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Merrigan, of whom seven
are living. These are: Mrs. Mary Fleege, Vermillion, S.D.; AndrewMerrigan, Beresford; Mrs. Sarah Fleege, Hawarden, Iowa; Mrs. EllaBarrett, Draper, S.D.; Mrs. Julia Gantz, Beresford (Jacob); Mrs.Millie Adams, Wausau, Wis.; Arthur Merrigan, Beresford, S.D. Thedeceased are Mrs. Elizabeth Birgen, Mrs. Teresa Huckert, Edward, Anna("Jennie" Mangan (Henry)), James, Celia (Millie and Celia were twins),and William Merrigan. She is also survived by 59 grandchildren and 16great grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held at the St. Teresa's church Tuesday, solemn
high mass being sung, and the remains were taken to Emmet forinterment. A very large company of friends assembled to pay theirrespect to the memory of the departed. In life, Mrs. Merrigan was adevout Catholic, and she passed away confident in that faith.
Those who attended the funeral from out of town were: Mr. Frank
Huckert and daughter Ella, of Marcus, Iowa; Mrs. Sarah Fleege anddaughter and son Evelyn and Arthur of Hawarden; Mrs. Ella Barrett ofDraper, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Birgen, of Mt. Vernon, S.D.; Mrs. E.M.Merrigan of Wessington Springs, S.D.; James and Edward Merrigan, Mrs.Ella Casey, and Lawrence Mahan of Garryowen, S.D.
