Individual:
Thomas was born in 1734 in Pennsylvania. He migrated to Virginia about mid 1700s and continued on into North Carolina with his two brothers and their friend, John Alexander. Thomas Welch, Sr. married Nancy Alexander, probably the sister of their friend, John Alexander. During the Revolution, Thomas Welch, Sr. served in the military. This information was in a letter written by Zenobia Ethel Welch to her cousin, Claude Deck Welch on August 10, 1917.
Thomas appeared in the 1790 census of Rowan County, NC. I have read that he signed a will on August 21, 1793 in *Rutherford County, NC where it is believed he died.
Thomas Welch appears on the North Carolina Revolutionary Army Accounts - Collection of the North Carolina Commission as follows: Vol. IX. Book 14, appendix (list) No. 8. David Miller E. T.
*Rutherford County came into existence in 1779 during the American Revolution. Prior to 1779, Rutherford County was part of Tryon County. Tryon County was formed from Mecklenburg County in 1768 and abolished in 1779 to form Rutherford and Lincoln counties. At its formation and until the border survey of 1772, Tryon County included all or portions of the South Carolina counties of York, Chester, Union, Spartanburg and Cherokee counties.
Thomas Welch was probably the first Welch in my lineage to move down into North Carolina. His uncle John, his father's brother migrated into North Carolina before him, however, but John Welch is not in my direct line.
