Individual:
The name William Welch: Some have added a middle name of Thomas. I am searching for documentation of this.
Pennsylvania was founded by an English Quaker, William Penn (1644 - 1718) when in 1681 he received a charter from King Charles II of England granting him the Pennsylvania area. He (William Penn) landed at the present day Chester, PA on Oct 29, 1682. It is believed that William Welch, Sr. was born in the Pennsylvania area which was admitted to the Union in 1787, the second state to be admitted.
No documentation has yet been found to indicate who William Welch's parents were. William may have had a Scotch or Scotch-Irish Origin. The first Federal US Census taken in 1790 shows 390 Welch heads of families and 1,782 scattered throughout the 13 colonies, with most being in Pennsylvania which had 79 families of the same name. If they were of Scotch heritage, they were most likely Presbyterian.
When the Protestant Reformation of the 17th century challenged the authority of the Catholic Church, the people of Scotland adopted the Protestant cause and stern doctrines of their great theologian, John Knox. It is likely that my Welch heritage is Scotch or Scotch-Irish and Presbyterian. By the time the Welch people moved into the Carolinas, they were Baptist.
See facts on Sadsbury or Sudsbury, Chester County, PA under William's son, James Welch - 1704-1754.
