Individual:
Ezekiel Staggs lived a long and interesting life. There have been more records found on Ezekiel than any of his descendants. Luckily, at that time, there was only one Staggs with his first name. Ezekiel moved around a lot and in those days it was not as easy to travel as it is now. He was first found in Franklin Co. TN in 1812. Next, in Jefferson Co., AL in 1823. By 1840 He was in Yalobusha Co. MS. In 1850 he was in Pontotoc Co. MS. Probably by 1855 he had left MS and in 1860, he shows up in Sevier Co. AR, which is right on the Oklahoma border (then Indian Territory). In 1870 he was living in Mt. Ida, Montgomery Co., AR, which is a little west of Hot Springs AR where he died.
Here is a list of records found.
1812, Franklin Co., TN tax records. Ezekiel Staggs
6/2/1823, Jefferson Co., AL, BLM records. Cash Entry Sale to Ezekiel Staggs, two 80-acre tracts.
(CASH ENTRY ACT; The Act of April 24, 1820 set the minimum price for sale of public land at $1.25 an acre, and the minimum unit of sale at 80 acres. Public lands were initially offered by district land offices at pre-announced, scheduled public auctions. Then, if unsold, lands became available for purchase at the $1.25 minimum price on a first-come-first-served basis.)
12/21/1824, Jefferson Co., AL land records, Deed Book #2, page 23..Ezekiel Staggs sold land to Carter F. Hall.
1830, Jefferson Co., AL Census,,Ezekiel Staggs..2 males under 5..3 males 5 to 10..2 males 10 to 15..1 male 40 to 50..1 female under 5..1 female 10 to 15..1 female 30 to 40

3/20/1837, Jefferson Co., AL, BLM records. Cash Entry Sale to Ezekiel Staggs, 80 acres
2/10/1839, Jefferson Co., AL land records, Deed Book #?, page 14..Ezekiel Staggs sold land to Pearson Rowe. Witnesses: S. W. Youngblood, J. Belcher

9/20/1839, Jefferson Co., AL, BLM records. Cash Entry Sale to Ezekiel Staggs, two 40-acre tracts.
(note; on this same date BLM records show Cash Entry Sales to Zachariah Staggs, 120 acres; Benjamin Staggs, 80 acres and James M. Staggs, 40 acres. All in the same or adjourning Townships)
1840, Yalobusha Co., MS Census..Ezekiel Staggs...2 males under 5...1 male 5 to 10...3 males 10 to 15...2 males 15 to 20... 2 males 20 to 30...1 male 50 to 60. 2 females under 5..1 female 20 to 30
(note; If Nancy Staggs is the daughter shown as under 5 in the 1830 census, she would have been under 15 at her marriage. The daughter 10 to 15 in the 1830 census could be the female shown as 20 to 30 in the 1840 census. Where was Ezekiel's wife? The early census' were almost useless. Also ages have to be taken with a grain of salt.)
