The Will of Henry Chatfield [the probate act styles him of North Mundham], 28 January 1636 [1636/37]. To be buried in the churchyard. Tothe High Church of Chichester 6d. To Habell Ingram my son-in-law 12d. Tomy son
John Chatfield 12d. To my son Edward Fowle 12d. To my son Francis Chatfield 100 pounds, providing that he surrender his estate in thosecopyhold lands that he is estated in unto his brother Thomas Chatfield,
which if he refuse to do, I give him 12d., for his portion. To my son Norrisses children, George, Annis, and Joseph, 15 pounds to be equallydivided among them at the age of twenty-one. If my son Francis die before
the age of twenty-one years, reversion of his portion to my sons Thomas Chatfield and George Chatfield, equally divided. If my son Thomas die,then my lands shall go to Francis Chatfield, and if Francis die, then toGeorge. To my younger son, George Chatfield 100 pounds at the age oftwenty-one, and if he do not live so long, reversion to my sons FrancisChatfield and Thomas Chatfield equally divided. To my wife Jane the useof
my lands for life, and my best bed furnished. Executor: Edward Fowle, Overseers: Thomas Peirse and John Smith, to each of whom I give 3s 4d.

COURT: The Will of Jane Chatfeild of North Mundham, co., Sussex, widow, 15 March 1638 [1638/39]. To the poor of North Mundham 20s. My latehusband Henry Chatfeild left by will to Francis Chatfeild, his son and myson 100 pounds, provided that he should surrender to his brother hisestate in copyhold lands wherein he is estated, and if he refused, hegave him 12d. He bequeathed to his and my youngest son, George Chatfeild,100 pounds at the age of twenty-one if he lived so long, and if not, tobe equally divided between Francis Chatfeild and Thomas Chatfeild hisbrothers. He gave me the use of his lands for life, and bequeathed 12d,to Edward Fowle, whom he made the executor. After he died, the saidEdward Fowle renounced said will, and I took adminstration of the estate,amounting to 118 pounds 4s 4d. Whereas my husband did owe certain debtson specialties, I will that all my husband's debts and legacies shall bepaid according to his will. I give to my youngest son, George Chatfeild,all the goods late my first husband Wickham's and which were not prisedin the inventory of my said last husband Henry Chatfeild. To my sonThomas Chatfeild a pair of the best wearing sheets. To my son FrancisChatfeild another pair of sheets. To my grandchild Thomas Wykeham anotherpair of sheets. Whereas my husband Henry Chatfeild did take on lease fromthe Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral Church of chichester a parcel ofland and two graden plots, with appurtenances, containing 25 acres, lyingat Fisher in the parish of North Mundham, called _____, for the lives ofRichard Parker and William Parker his brother ____, John Fayers and ofthe longest liver of them, at the annual rent of __, 8d., and a couple ofcapons, on which land he build a barn and certain stalls or row housesfor cattle, now it is my will that the profits of the said ____ shall beused to pay the legacies and debts of my said husband, if any be unpaid,and also for the performing of this my present will and the payment ofall charges and debts. My executors
shall take no damage or loss, as any of my children whom my will and the estate of my husband Henry Chatfeild do principally concern are all underage, and that is their great courtesy and kindness to me and my said
children that they take upon themselves the execution of my will. My executors to renew the lease of Sowthees for there ____, if the said termbe ended by the deaths of the said Richard Parker, William Parker, andJohn Fayers, before my will and my husband's be performed. And after theybe performed and the fines paid for the new lease of any, the remainderof the term to my son Thomas. I make my sons-in-law William Langrish and
Edward Fowle executors in trust, and give to them 10s. apiece above their
charges. To Elizabeth my daughter, wife of Abell Ingram, 3s. I desire Thomas Perce to be my overseer, and give to him 12d. [Signed] Thehandmark of Jane Chatfeild. Notes for FRANCIS CHATFIELD:
Baptized at North Mundham between February 23 1616/7 and May 11, 1617, Francis died probably unmarried at Guilford, CT about 1647. Francis isnamed in the wills of both his parents. He emigrated to New England in
163;9 among the Kent and Sussex followers of Rev. Henry Whitfield, who founded and settled Guilford, Conneticut. He and his brothers were amongthe few early settlers of Guilford to whom the designations "Mr." and"gentlemen" were applied. Francis was among the original 25 signers ofthe plantation covenant. Francis opposed the combination of theplantation of Guilford with that of New Haven, and for this, on the 14thof August, 1645, he was arraigned before the magistrate and deputies.Francis died about two years after in 1647, unmarried, and his estate wasdivided between his brothers Thomas and George Chatfield per WFT 2 #1034
