The Washington Rifles was among the first to be "called up for service" by the Confederate Government. The Company was mustered into Confederate service as Company E, 1st Regiment Georgia Infantry on March 16, 1861 and mustered out March 18, 1862. A majority of the soldiers were commissioned or enlisted in other Washington County units. Most joined the 3rd Company B, 12th Battalion Georgia Light Artillery or Martin's Battery Georgia Light Artillery.
