GLASCOCK COUNTY (GA) OBITUARY RECORDS -Gibson Record 22 Aug 1928MR. JACOB FULGHUMMr. Jacob A Fulghum, aged 78 years, died almost suddenly at hishome here at 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon of last week. WhileMr. Fulghum had been in bad health since a stroke of paralysisabout severn years ago, which almost deprived him of the powerof speech and otherwise affected his physical condition, he wasup and about when stricken Friday, and his death was unexpectedand was a shock to the community Mr. Fulghum was born inWashington county and came to Warren county when quite a youngman. He lived for about 40 years near Beall Springs where heoperated a large farm, and was distinguished as the originatorof the strain known as "Fulghum Oats." Many years ago hisattention was attracted by birds feeding on one stalk of oats ina field which was ripening much earlier than the others. Hesecured one or two grains from this stalk and carefully plantedsame in his garden. From this small beginning he developed thewell-known oats which bear his name, and are known from one sideof the country to the other. In the records of the agriculturaldepartment of the United States there appears a history of Mr.Fulghum's work in developing this early strain of oats. Mr.Fulghum in addition to being deeping interested in scientificagriculture was also for many years a breeder of fine horses andcows. He was recognized as a leader also in church affairs,being a deacon in the Warrenton Baptist church at the time ofhis death, and held the same position for over thirty-five yearsin Long Creek Baptist church before moving to Warrenton to liveabout ten years ago.Mr Fulghum was married to Miss Atlanta Fowler, of Warren County,and from this union there are now living five sons and twodaughters. These are Mr. J. Leon Fulghum, of Warrenville, S.C.'Messrs J. Bunyan and Jesse F. Fulghum, of Warren County; Rev.James F. Fulghum, of Sparta; Mr. Paul Fulghum, of Aiken, SC; MrsW. G Bryan, of Riddleville and Mrs. J. W. Kelley, of Culverton.Mr. Fulghum's second marriage was to Miss Della Courson, ofWarren county, who survives him, with the children of this unionwho are Dr. R. Lin Fulghum and Misses Ellie Wree and LillianFulghum, of Warrenton He is also survived by twenty-sevengrandchildren and three great-grandchildren. All his sons anddaughters and nearly every member of the families of thosemarried were present at the funeral services held at the homehere Saturday afternoon at three o'clock, conducted by Rev. W.P. Brooks, Jr, pastor of the Baptist church here, assisted byRev. E. C. Wilson, pastor of the Warrenton Methodist church.After the services the remains were carried to the Fulghum placeand laid to rest in the family cemetery there. The six sons ofMr. Fulghum were pallbearers-Warrenton Clipper. Gibson Record 22Aug 1928
