Notes
Individual:
George Washington Wakefield was killed in the Kansas raids of 1856. He
appears to have moved from Missouri to get away from slavery only to losehis life to the Missouri raiders in the struggle that followed.
Tranny Burrow Wakefield tells about a family where brothers fought against each other. George and Nancy Smith Wakefield (not the same asGeorge Washington Wakefield) had three sons, Benjamin and James Monroewho both enlisted with the CSA and Thomas L. Wakefield who enlisted inthe Union Army.
According to the Wakefield Memorial, George Washington Wakefield, son of John Wakefield was born in South Carolina. He removed with his fatherto Illinois in 1810. He served in the war of 1812 and the Black Hawk War;removed to Missouri about 1838 and settled in Bates county. In 1854 heremoved to Bourbon County, Kansas where he was taken by pro-slavery men, from Missouri, and after being robbed of $3000 of money and livestock, hewas carried away and murdered, all because he was a "free state man,"leaving his six orphan children destitute on the ashes of their burnedhome. His wife Ruth Osburn had died just previously.
