Individual:
Obit for William Near:
William F. Near was born 2-29-1820 in the village of Sconondoa, Onieda County, New York and died 1-9-1912 at the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 11 days. He was united in marriage on 3-12-1843 to Mary M. Bristol, with whom he lived happily over 63 years. In September of the same year, together with the family of Huram Bristol, they came to Michigan by way of Cleveland to Detroit by boat, then by rail to Jackson and hauled their goods with teams to Mason where Mr. Bristol had purchased some land the year before. They stored their goods in Mr. Blaines tavern-barn while they went out into the woods 1 1/2 miles and built their log houses on what is now the Transwell Farm. (Columbia and College Roads) At that time Mason had but 26 buildings.
The following year Mr. Near and his wife were engaged to take charge of the County Farm where they remained for several years.
Deceased is survived by 5 children: 4 daughters: Mrs. Emma Watson of Lansing; Mrs. F.J. Seeley of Pontiac; Mrs. B.W. Evarts of New Sharon, Iowa; Mrs. J.M. VanCamp of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; and 1 son W.L. Near who resides in Jackson and with whom he has lived during the past several months. One daughter Mrs. F.M. Vandercook died in 1884 and 1 daughter died in infancy. His wife passed away 5-18-1906, since which time he has constantly grieved over his great loss.
During several years since his wife's death Mr. Near lived alone at home in Mason, but on account of his failing eyesight he very reluctantly left this home in September last, and went to reside with his son. Late in November he suffered a stroke of paralysis and becoming entirely helpless, it was decided he could be given better care at the Jackson City Hospital to which institution he was moved on December second.
During his brief stay at the hospital he received all the kind care and attention known to nurses and hospital force, and passed away January 9th at 2:30 am.
The funeral was held from the home of his son, and conducted by Rev. H.D. Alin of Loomis Park Baptist Church, and the remains were taken to Mason and placed in the vault. Mr. Near was an upright and loyal citizen, a kind and devoted husband and father, and an obliging neighbor.
