He resided in Dakota Territories "My Father Peter Tubbs was a Shoemaker by trade, he came from Connecticut or New Hamphire I could not tell which as I was to young when he died to remember. He was in the war of 1812 at the defense of Sackets Harbor. In the year of 1838 he moved to the State of Illinois from Onida Co. New York where he died in 1844, being the owner of 600 acres of land, and an Estate valued at 25 thousand dollars. If you would write my Brother Richard A. Tubbs, Viola, Richland, Co. Wisconsin he could give you a full history of my Fathers family as he is one of the oldest of my brothers (myself the youngest) I cannot give you much of a history of my Fathers family and Ancestors, as my Parents died while I was quite young. But I give you peticulars as far as I know. I have heard my Parents say that my grand Father Tubbs was bitten by a mad dog, and Died from the effects of the bite. And if any Tubbs should claim relationship and could recount the incident of the mad dog then he certainly was related to us. My Father had two Brothers, Richard & Samuel. Samuel was a minister, I was named after him. As to my own history, I was born in Onida Co. State of New York in 1833. Left the State in 1838 and came to Kane Co. Illinois, where I lived untill 1853 when I went to Wisconsin and engaged in the Merchant business, Post Master &c untill Aug 1862 when I enlisted as a Private Soldier in Co. A. first Wisconsin Heavy Artillery serving as such in the defences of Washington until 1865, Jan 20th, When I was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, and ordered by Secretary of War to join Co. A 50th Reg. Wisconsin Vol Infantry Stationed at St. Louis Mo. Was in comand of Corps at Several important Stations in Mo, and Kansas during the Summer of 1865. In Agust of that year the compay was ordered to Ft Rice Dakota Teritory where it arived in October. Was detailed during the Winter to draw birds Eye views of Fort and Military buildings for the use of Secretay of War, and General Commanding Department. In Feb. 1866 recived Commission as first Lieutenant Served as such untill June 15th 1866 When mustered out of Service of U.S. at Madison Wisconsin with rank of Brevet Captain. In 1870 went to Winneshiek Co., Iowa. lived there untill 1884 when I came to Codington Co., Dakota, where I now reside. Yours Respectfully Samuel S. Tubbs My parents had 18 children."
