Notes
Individual:
Planted Cork Oaks at Wivenhoe House in 1814.

Commisioned Constable painting of Wivenhoe House. http://www.nga.gov/cgi-bin/pimage?1150+0+0+gg57 General Rebow and friends visited Constable's studio 10-12 May 1838 at 35 Charlotte St where the greater part of Constable's work was assembled together for the last time.

BIOGRAPHY: From Essex Review LIII 87-91 by G.O. Rickword. In the Royal American Regt, 60th Foot, Two batallions were recuited in 1787 on the continent of Europe at 7 guineas per head. They were assembled at Chatham and then shipped to the West Indies. Aged 17 he was gazetted as an ensign on 14 Nov 1787 in one of these batallions (4th) and accompanied the regiment to the West Indies. He studied the art of war amongst a medley of English and foreign officers. On 14th Oct 1789 he was a Lieutenant and Captain on 18 Sept 1792. Commanded the regiments grenadiers when Martinique was captured and in March 1794 and St Lucia and Guadeloupe in April. In this last action he was wounded in both thighs and invalided to England. He obtained his majority on 20 Feb 1796 according to this article in the Essex Review and changed to the 2nd Life Guards on 16 Feb 1797, possibly using money from the dowry on his marriage in 1796 enabling him to go from a 'condemned' regiment to one of the best regiments. On marriage, he took the surname and arms of the Rebows. He was gaztted Major on 25 Sep 1799 . He also held a cornet's commission in the Tendring Hundred Volunteers Cavalry formed by John Hanson Esqr of Great Bromley Hall. he was promoted to a super-numerary Lt Colonel in the 1st Life Guards on 20 Aug 1807 and a Major General on 28 Nov 1812. He was posted to command of the Household Brigade (1st and 2nd Life Guards and the Royal Horse Guards) who had recently landed in Lisbon. He took in hand the Life Guards who, according to Sir Stapleton Cotton, were in a helpless state, but when Col. Willoughby inspected the brigade a few days after he took command, he found that the "old sabreur" had taken them in hand so briskly that the colonel and several officers were threatening to resign. After a period of leave in England, he was placed on the staff and continued to serve in the Peninsular War until thge conclusion of hostilities. He returned to England, taking two cork oaks with him which he planted at Wivenhoe Park. He retired to seek domestic peace and quiet in the bosom of his family and commissioned the Constable painting of Wivenhoe Park soon after his return in 1816. He was gazetted to a Lt General on 27 May 1825 and was the Deputy Lt of Essex and a magistrate. He was involved in the railway line to Harwich. In 1836 he discharged his bailiff Samuel Goyner who the threatened to shoot the general. In July 1837, he hosted a ploughing contest at Wivenhoe Park. Beer and prizes were presented in the house. He gave Âú100 to the new Town Hall in Colchester which opened in 1845. He died on 7 Oct 1845 and was interred in the family vault at St Mary at the Walls in Colchester. The cortege consisted of the hearse and 8 mourning coaches, each drawn by four horses and, in accordance with the custom of the day was preceeded by two mutes, the undertakers and tradesmen and tenants walking two abreast.

WILL: PROB 11/2027 22 November 1845. Francis Slater Rebow, General in Her Majesty's Service of Wivenhoe Park near Colchester, Essex

High and Low Lighthouses at Harwich Built in 1818 under the supervision of John Rennie Senior to replace earlier wooden ones. Belonged to General Rebow who became very rich by charging 1d per ton light duties on all cargoes coming into the port. But in 1836 Trinity House (TH) acquired the Harwich Lights from General Rebow for Âú31,730, there being 12 years and 5 days remaining of his lease. It is suspected that Rebow had become aware of the changing course of the channel. The lighthouses became redundant in 1863 for just this reason and the new cast iron lighthouses were erected at Dovercourt near the present Phoenix Hotel. The High Lighthouse continued to be used by mariners as a landmark.
