Gowans-Kent also sold silverware especially to companies like the C.P.R. such as the Elkington brand which had silver plated line. I have an advt. from Saturday Night Magazine "we do our own cutting and there is no finer cut glass in America. In buying from us as well as sercuring the very best quality, you save the duty and American manufacturers profit "dated June 27,1903". The company was formed on Jan.1, 1872 an indenture of partnership -John Gowans of County of Wentworth & Henry Kent of the city of Hamilton July 1 1873. Co. came into existance at 10 Front Street Toronto by 1881. Tthey were at 14 Front wholesale china, crockery, glassware, lampgoods, &coal oil 1885 at 12-14 Front wholesale crockery 1893 10-16 Front and had a cut glass factory managed by a Mr. Clapperton in 1963 bought by Mr.

I believe the photo of John Gowans was taken around the time of his 1st marriage to Isabella Bethune as he appears to be in his 30's in the photo whereas he was around 56 when he married Eliza Thornton. Elsie Gowans wrote the following on the back of the photo, "My Dear, Dear Father when he was married written by Elsie Gowans"

The Gowans-Kent Company
We were unable to uncover a great deal of information about this Toronto based firm; although it appears that it was founded just prior to the turn of the 20th Century. Gowans-Kent pieces were marked with the word “Elite” inside a Maple Leaf and Circle. We have seen both purely geometric and floral-geometric items manufactured by this company. The quality of the glass appears to be excellent on all of their pieces.
A Small Dish Signed "Gowans Kent"
This small dish (circa 1900) is signed with word “Elite” inside an encircled maple leaf.
It is decorated with a simple hobstar and fan pattern but it is hand polished and cut on a high quality blank.

Canadian pieces found for sale now date mainly from 1900 to 1925. Many small shops and a few large ones were set up after 1900. Polishing by acid was done in most shops, but Gundy-Clapperton used wooden and felt wheels as late as 1913.
Gowans, was listed crockery and Kent & Company of Toronto as a wholesale dealer in glassware in 1897. In 1900,G.H. Clapperton, after a ten-year apprenticeship with Libbey, went to work for Gowans, Kent, where he cut the first brilliant cut glass in Canada. The trademark is ELITE-on-a-maple—leaf. The smaller older creamer has the scrolled initials EH on it. The handle looks like a good idea. The moss green Woods& Sons mark with the importer as Gowans Kent & Co. Ltd Toronto on it.
Brenda's collection includes a compote dish that stands about 8" in height and 14" in width. It is the green hotel ware like that little creamer from the Elgin House. Its green mark reads Grindley's vitrified for Hotels & Clubs. The wholesaler is also Gowans Kent & Co. Ltd. of Toronto. The style of the Clevelands House name is also the same script as the EH on the creamer. Obviously Gowan Kent were very busy being the middle man importer in the 20's.
