Notes
Individual:
Mary was a tall and elegant lady with a wonderful disposition. She had to be - while raising 5 children. She graduated from Margaret Eaton College and also attended University of Toronto. She was very athletic and encouraged participation in sports in her children. She taught swimming courses prior to her marriage. During WWII, Mary and her sister Ibby were the only two females on a base in Halifax with 500 men. She plotted aircraft routes. She taught high school physical education at Glebe Collegiate prior to her 1st pregnancy. From then on she worked from the home and cottage raising her family. She had many interests which included playing bridge, curling and was a member of the St. Matthew's Church Talent Club. They put together some wonderful cookbooks. During the 1950's she and Burt were avid square dancers.

Helen Thompson/Law's memories of Mary
Since I got your email I have been thinking a lot about your Mother and my memories of her. When we moved to Ottawa she stayed behind in Tornto to finish her final year at BSS (Bishop Strachan School). Then she was in Toronto for four years after that getting her phys. ed. degree so we didn't see too much of her. She and Ibby then joined the air force and spent the rest of the war in Halifax and Newfoundland. I do have a very vivid memory of the day your Dad came home. Mary, Mother and I went to the Coliseum in Ottawa to meet him. The soldiers all marched in to the band playing "It's Been A Long, Long Time". It was really moving! When they were dismissed we were supposed to walk sedately onto the field to meet them. Mary couldn't wait and vaulted over the fence. I think she was the only one who did that! Another memory would be that Christmas eve -1945. They were getting married in June and Mary decided she needed to learn how
to cook - up until then she had not had much opportunity. She made a rice pudding for dessert that night and it was AWFUL - Very lumpy and glooey. John did not want to eat it but Mother insisted he try it. He gagged on a lump and had to rush to the bathroom and throw. Mary was furious with him! Mother had to pour a lot of oil on the troubled waters. She was very good at that! Notwithstanding the rice pudding, your Mum became a great cook and I remember watching her in the kitchen whipping up all kinds of goodies and talking to herself all the time. That must be where I get it from. My cooking is not as good as hers though. As you know she was a wonderful athlete and really excelled in the water. She always entered the "Long Plunge" at the Regatta. Do they still have that? She never won because one of the men up there had even more amazing lungs than she did but she usually came second away ahead of everybody else. This is probably enough for today but I will try to think of some more stories for you. Love, Aunt HelenCertificate of Marriage
