| Basinger Ohio Swiss Alsace Ancestry |
The earliest origins of the Ohio Swiss Alsace Basinger Ancestry descend from Johannes Bösiger (b.<1670>) and Elsbeth Ryf of Untersteckholz, Berne ,Switzerland. Of Mennonite faith, the Bösigers left Switzerland for Alsace, France in the 1740's. They lived in the Normanvillar forest region near Belfort, France in the area of Florimont, France. There are four or five branches of our family that settled in Ohio, mainly in Wayne, Allen, Columbiana, and Putnam Counties. We still have distant cousins living in Untersteckholz and throughout Berne,Switzerland. Although the Pennsylvania Basingers (Bessingers, Michael, Peter and Phillip) were also from Alsace, France, we have not yet been able to find their connection with our Swiss Mennonite Boesigers. Variant spellings of our name are Boesiger,Boesinger, Bösiger, Bäsinger. Some relatives spell our name Bassinger or Baysinger. There are occasional duplicate individuals with different spelling in this file. If you have any connection with our family, we would like to hear from you. Many of the Basinger branches need to be updated and corrections made. We are trying to find earlier origins of the Bösigers in Rumisberg, Herzogenbuchsee, Langenthal, and Lotzwil, which are very near Untersteckholz in the Emmental region of Berne, Switzerland. Most of the information on this website is from the file of Anna B. Selfridge of the Allen County Museum and Historical Society in Lima, Ohio and also the late, Dr. Delbert Gratz, of Bluffton College Mennonite Historical Library and leading Ohio Mennonite historian and genealogist. He did much of the original research and the most recent findings in the 17th. and 18th. Century. We are currently researching our Swiss roots through e-mailing Boesiger's in Berne, Switzerland and using the LDS International Genealogical Index/Ancestral Files. There are at least 1800 Boesigers in the Swiss LDS films that we have been unable connect. Among them are files from the Oberbipp Church Records and Herzogenbuchsee Municipal Files. You can view most of these files online at the LDS Search website. .
