!: Rev. John Smith was one of the most interesting individuals in Plymouth Colony history. H
e appeared as a settler on Barnstable on the Cape Cod Peninsula in 1630 at the age of 16. In a deposition given by himself in 1651 he alleged he was the son of Thomas Smith of Brinspittal, an old village a few miles from Dorchester, England, he was born there in 1614, came to New England in 1630 on the "White Angel" and was the first of the name in New England. He was made a Freeman in 1640 and joined the first church of Barnstable in the same year. In 1663 he became pastor of the Barnstable church. Susanna Hinckley, his wife was the daughter of Samuel Hinckley and Sarah Soule and sister of Governor Thomas Hinckley of Plymouth Colony. She died in Barnstable, Mass. in Dec. 1667, probably in childbirth as the youngest child Joseph was born 6 Dec 1667. John married secondly Sarah Poole.
