Item: Will of John Hancock, being in good health and perfect sense.
Legatees: Son Lewis to have land in Fluvanna County where I did live.
Lend to my wife (not named) the whole estate during her life and widowhood,
after her decease to:
Son William, a part of the land whereon I now live, from the end of Mill Dam on the ridge to the north line.
Son Major, the remaining part from there down
My Son Benjamin, my wearing clothes
After the decease of my wife, the rest of the estate to be divided between my five daughters and my son William,
to wit: Nancy Corn, Rodue Lane, Elizabeth Mayo, Judith Mayo, and Susannah
Hancock and a proportionable part to daughter Mary Morrison's two eldest
children Allen & Jincy Morrison.

He married ELIZABETH MADDOX in St James Northam, GOOCHLAND CO, VA, October 16, 1755. (ELIZABETH MADDOX is #47.) ELIZABETH was born in GOOCHLAND CO, VA January 1, 1733. ELIZABETH died 1805 in AMHERST CO, VA, at 72 years of age. Birthdate from Arvil Hancock ! Marriage date "HOPKINS OF VA" ! Left Will in Amherst Co VA dated 1805(??) John was probably born in New Kent Co. VA. He later lived in Goochland County and finally moved to Albemarle Co (now Fluvanna). He was granted 799 acres of land in Sussex Co. on 16 Aug., 1756 (620 acres had been granted by a letter patent 28 Sept., 1732. Late in life he moved to that part of Henry Co from which Patrick Co was taken, about 1785. (Patrick Co. was formed from Henry Co. in 1791). "In consideration of the sum of 10 shillings of good and lawful money, John Hancock was granted one certain parcel of land, containing 87 acres, lying in Co. of Albemarle, on the S. branches of Cunningham's Creek, beg. at Wm. Moore's corner to pointers in Colonel Hopkins' line, So. on George Hilton's line, East to Thomas Jefferson's line, then on to Wm. Moore's (Morris') line North to beg. July 5, 1774. Vol 42, p. 709. On Aug 1, 1777, John Hancock of Fluvanna Co. conveyed this property to his son, Lewis Hancock. (Fluvanna was formed from Albemarle Co. in 1777.) On August 1, 1777, John Hancock of Fluvanna Co deeded his son Benjamin 182 acres on Cunningham Creek , and his son Lewis 87 acres adjoining the lines of Thomas Jefferson, John Haden and Henry Haislip. On January 27, 1799, John Hancock and Elizabeth his wife, of Patrick Co, in consideration of $260, deeded land to Jacob Mayo, of Fluvanna Co. On September 13, 1802, they deeded him 147 acres in consideration of $100. John left a will dated November 10, 1802, in which he devised his son Lewis "the land where on I lived in Fluvanna Co," and the balance of his estate to his wife for life or widowhood, and then to be divided among his children. John and Elizabeth lived for many years on the branches of Cunningham Creek, Fluvanna Co., VA. DEATH: John died at the home of his son, Benjamin. He was a Revolutionary War veteran and served as a private (and a Major by some accounts). See account book1784, page 2, VA State Library. Major Hancock was named as his legatee.
