The Alvis Exchange, 48-2: âÇúAll the Shadrach AlvisesâÇù
The second Shadrach Alvis to appear in the records was in Tennessee from 1804 until the late 1820s. He was born according to later census records ca 1784-89 in VA, probably a son of Ashley Alvis, brother of the above mentioned Shadrach, and his first wife, Elizabeth Knolling.
His marriage, 21 Oct 1804 to Nancy Hail, is recorded in the Sumner Co TN Marriage Book 1787-1838, p 19. He also served in the War of 1812, enlisting in Sumner Co as a Private, 24 Sep 1813 and Sep 28 1814 (Walter T Durham, Old Sumner: A History of Sumner County TN From 1805-1861, 1972, pp 486 [Shadrick Alvire], 490. Byron and Barbara Sistler, Index to Early Tennessee Tax Lists, 1977, p 4*, shows Shadrach Alves in Sumner Co in 1811. Records of Lawrence County TN, County Court Minutes, Vol. I, 1818-1823, a 1936 WPA Project copied in 1987 at the TN State Library, has the following records: on page 11, Shadrack Allvis was part of a jury at the August term 1818, and on page 60, a record copied from 1 Apr 1822, âÇúThere was produced in open court two deed of gift from Shadrick Alvis to his brother John A. Hail for certain property then mentioned and the sd. Shadrick Alvis come into court and acknowledged the execution of the same wher[e]upon it is ordered by the court that it be certifiied for registration.âÇù Two paragraphs later in the transcribed record and the same day David Crockett also âÇúproduced in open court a deed of giftâÇù; this Shadrach must have known Davy Crockett.
He appeared in various court records in Lawrence Co TN and in the deed index between 1818 until about 1841. See Records of Lawrence County TN, General Index to Deed Books A-P, 1819-1871, a 1939 WPA Project, copied in 1987 at the TN State Library, pages 1-2. Shadrach Alvis received land grants in the latter county on 10 and 11 Feb 1826.

Notes which Edmund Young Alvis dictated to his son definitely state Shadrach was a son of Ashley and Elizabeth Knolling.
An extra indication that Shadrach belongs in AshleyâÇôs family can be found in the fact that several of Ashley SrâÇôs son EdmundâÇôs children (Elizabeth Wells, William Carroll Alvis, Tyler P Alvis, poss David and Permelia Alvis) came to Jefferson Co IL or to counties near there. Shadrach was the first Alvis in the area.
