    . His 1900 census lists age 21 (b 1878); 1910 says 27 (b 1883). His father's Civil War pension papers (Certificate #336027) have too many differing dates to be of value; e.g. Joshua A L was listed in 1898 as born 13 Jun 1879 and in 1915 as born 2 Aug 1876. His mother s estate gives age as 58 in May 1938 (b [Jun] 1879). His mother's Bible gives birthday as Jun 13 1879, which is most probable date. Lincoln s death certificate gives birthday as Jun 13 1877, which is what Art Alvis always heard to be the year. As an old man he believed he was born in 1877, exactly 25 years before George O. Alvis. Cemetery inscription reads 1878.
