Individual:
U.S. Army, 149th Illinois Infantry, Company E.; U.S. Civil War.
Grave stones photographed. There is one large one which is a joint stone for
William O. Payne & Elizabeth A. Payne his wife. Immediately next to the stone
is a smaller white stone which says, "W. O. Payne, Co. E., 149 Ill. Inf." That
smaller stone was likely a "government issue." UPDATE 2008: Sometime after
1996, the small white-stone military marker was replaced with a modern-day
bronze marker on a stone base; the new military marker is flush to the ground.
All old military markers at the cemetery were replaced by the Veterans
Administration. What happened to the old stone maker is unknown. OBITUARY: Appeared January 2, 1889, probably in the Danville Commercial News:
Headline: Another Soldier Gone
Wm. O. PAYNE
Died, after a long sickness, Wm. O. Payne, at his home in Potomac, on Saturday,
aged 51 years, of diabetes. The deceased was the father of thirteen children,
four only surviving, two by his first and two by his second wife, who survives.
He was born in this county, and served through the war. A large congregation
was present at his funeral on Saturday. The deceased was a large hearted and
most generous man, and died with the friendship of every one.
