Was a Native of Otsego County and Came of Revolutionary Stock.
Ithamar Spencer, 89, a subscriber to the Evening Journal since 1840 andone of this newspaper's oldest readers, died yesterday at the home of hisson-in-law, Harmon S. Patten, Albany and Shaker Road. He had been aninvalid for the last two years. Hewasborn in Maryland, Otsego county,April 27, 1832, the son of Captain Ithamar Spencer [sic - s.b. Philip A.Spencer; Capt Spencer was his great-grandfather, b. ca 1733] and JaneWorden Spencer.. He came of Revolutionary stock of English and Scottishdescent.
Mr. Spencer moved with his parents to Albany when he was eight years old[1840]. They lived on Central Avenue and his father conducted a grocerystore between the years of 1838 and 1866. The son, who was one of threechildren, learned the trade of meat cutter in the old Center markets atSouth Pearl and Beaver streets, near where the city building is nowlocated. Later, he operned a market of his own which was known as theNational Garden Market. Later stillhe conducted the Spencer market at 2Central avenue for about 50years.
Had Nine Chldren.
He married Miss Julia Ann Kirchner, daughter ofNathan Kirchner,in 1860.They had nine children, the following eight of whom are living: John I.Spencer, of this city; Mrs. Harmon S. Patten, Mrs. Frank M.Evory, Mrs.Thomas L. Blackburn, Mrs. Walter Emerick, Mrs. Louis E. HeinmillerandMrs. William C. Nicoll, all of Albany, and Mrs. Amelia Talmadge ofYonkers. Mr. Spencer's father was at one time supervisor of the old ninthward (now the 10th ward).
The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at thehome of Mr. Patten and will be private. Dr. J. V. Moldonhawer, pastorofWestminister Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will be in theRural cemetery [Albany Rural Cem, Menands, NY]. The bearers will be theson, John I. Spencerr, and the seven sons-in-law.
