Individual:
INFORMATION ABOUT HENRY CLAY (Taken from census returns and local directories in Birmingham C entral Library) :
1. No trace of Henry's whereabouts between his baptism and the 1851 census (not at home in 18 41)
2. The 1851 census lists a Henry BARTON, leather cutter, born in Wirksworth, as a visitor t o the home of Joseph WOODING, 62 Navi Street Birmingham. It is possible that this is Henry CLAY, though his age is stated to be 33 years, not 37 as it should have been.
3. Post Office Directory of Birmingham 1854 lists a Henry BARTON, boot and shoe maker, at 9 5 Broad Street, Islington, Birmingham. In 1855 he is joined by a Lydia EVANS (milliner), and in 1860 the names become Henry Barton CLAY and Mrs Lydia CLAY. Henry occupied the same address (which was a business address) until at least 1871.
4. The first mention of Henry's home address is 7 Calthorpe Road, Edgbaston, in an 1871 direc tory. This address on the 1871 census is occupied by Mrs Lydia CLAY (dealer in shoes) and a domestic servant. Henry was not at home.
5. Sometime before 1875 Henry left 95 Broad St (which was taken over by a butcher) and becam e a commercial traveller (?selling shoes).
6. In 1878 he and Lydia moved from Calthorpe Road to 324 Bristol Rd, Edgbaston, and from 188 3 to 1903 they were at 188 Bristol Road. After Lydia died in 1903, Henry moved to 68 Harrow Rd, Bournebrook, a terraced house built in 1897 and still standing today.
7. Henry died in 1905 and left over Âú6000 in his will, which was divided between the childre n of his brothers Samuel and Joseph.
Marriage:
1. Marriage possibly between 1855 and 1860 (see note 3 under Henry Barton Clay). The evidenc
e from directories suggests that Lydia's maiden name was EVANS, and that she was a milliner. However, no marriage certificate has been found, BUT there is a certificate for the marriage of a Henry CLAY to a Lydia MASON at the Church of the Saviour, Edward St Birmingham, on 26th Nov 1859. This has some matching details to what is expected ie. residence for both is Islington, Birmingham, Henry's father was James Clay, Henry was 46 years old. The differences are Lydia was 44 not 46 as suggested by most censuses, Henry's occupation was Commercial Traveller not shoemaker, James Clay's occupation was "agent" not shoemaker, and there is no mention of "Barton" anywhere on the certificate. One piece of evidence in favour of this being the correct marriage is that the IGI has a baptism for Lydia Mason daughter of John Mason (which is the father's name given on the marriage cert) on 14th June 1813 in Cradley, Worcs (where all the censuses say Lydia was born).
2. Henry and Lydia had no children.
