[Brēderbund WFT Vol. 3, Ed. 1, Tree #4737, Date of Import: Oct 3, 2001]

There is little doubt that Ella is the daughter of Robert L. and Charlotte Faires Plummer, although a direct link is lacking. Records areconfusing, beginning with those containing her name. Her marriage recordsays "Ella". Her death certificate and the 1900 and 1920 census' say"Ellen". The 1860 and 1870 census' refer to her as Rebecca E. On a listPlummer children given in the Talbott book, the child in her place isnamed Eleanor. This could be correct because her maternal grandmother'sname was Elinor. My theory is that her given name was Ella, whether ornot derived from Eleanor. She, herself, preferred Ellen and used thatwhen she could. My mother's name was Ella named after her. Birth also appears different on different records. However, 1853 seems tobe about correct. That's what her death certificate and the 1860 censusindicate. She came after brother William, 1852, and before sisterCharlotte, 1860. She was either born in Marion Twp, Morgan Co, Ohio orAdams Twp, Washington Co just a few miles away. Her older siblings wereborn in the former, her younger ones, the latter. Ella was one of eleven children born to Robert L. and Charlotte FairesPlummer, although I can only account for nine. The family lived inMorgan, Washington and Athens counties, but were apparently in JeffersonCo when she met John Porter. They were married there in July, 1878. Her father died there in March, 1878. They remained in Jefferson Co untilthe early 1900's. She was in Youngstown, Ohio according to the 1920census living with her son Ralph and working as a practical nurse at ahospital. She was in East Cleveland-Cleveland Heights in the mid 1920's.Enolia Funkhouser remembers her being there and my mother told me thatshe was employed as a governess by wealthy families

in the Heights area. She lived with or near us during the Depression years. I remember her as being physically very small. I remember ridingmy bike to visit with her when she was living as a companion to anelderly woman in Alliance in the late thirties. I remember going tovisit Aunt Debbie, Aunt Lottie and Aunt Lizzie at a home near Damascus,Ohio. I don't know if Ella was there. I now know that the home belongedto Aunt Lizzie. I saw Grandma Porter (Ella) for the last time in the late1940's at a nursing home on State Street in Alliance. She died in 1949and is buried along side her son and daughter-in-law in City Cemetary,Alliance, Ohio.
