175 ARE PRESENT AT FAMILY REUNION
About 175 descendants and friends of the family attended the
first meeting of the
O'SHIELDS family reunion last Saturday at the O'Shields home place near
Friendship Church.
Elaborate plans had been made for the gathering
but owing to the critical illness of
J.M. O'SHIELDS practically all plans were abandoned except for the serving
of the bountious picnic dinner, which washeld on improvised tables in the
front yard of the old homestead.
MR. O'SHIELDS died early Sunday morning and was
buried Monday afternoon.
A feature of the sumptious dinner was the old-time barbecue
hash, which was cooked by UNCLE WILEY O'SHIELDS, who is an expert and was
enjoyed by all present.
After dinner they were addressed by JUDGE J.J. BURNETT who gave the
detailed outline of the O'SHIELDS family , concluding by arranging for a
permanent organization to be known as the O'SHIELDS FAMILY REUNION ASSOC.
Afterwards the following officers were elected for a term of one year; W.G.S.
O'SHIELDS, president, J.L. O'SHIELDS, vice-president, and MRS. J.E. HICKS,
sect.-treasurer. A duet composed of JUDGE BURNETT and MRS. M.C. THOMAS with MRS.
J.J. BURNETT at the piano, renered two beautiful selections, ' The Shephard of
Love', and ' It Pays to Serve Jesus'. Then the meeting was brought to a close by
prayer and singing.
