Notes
Individual:
John Brevard, a French Huguenot, came to Maryland from Northern Irelan
d with the McKnitt family and settled on the Elk River. He married one of the McKnitt daughters. Their eldest son moved to North Carolina about 1740-1750.

The Huguenot Society of Florida No. 9-256 is a "Proof of Eligibility fo r Membership" on Billye Taylor Bennette (Mrs. Alfred E.) based on descent from Jean Brevard.

from "Piedmont Partisan"-----

Mary Brevard came of a romantic and restless stock. Like the Picke nses, Pettigrews and Gastons of the upcountry Carolinas, the Brevards were originally French Huguenots who fled to northern Ireland after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes and threw in their lot with the Scotch Presbyterians. The French and Scotch Calvinists found themselves congenial neighbors and soon interbred.
The first of the Brevards in the colonies, according to a brother o f Mary, "came into America with a William Wallace and family from Ireland an orphan and then but a boy. The family of Wallace settled near the Head of Elk Cycil County Maryland. My grandfather we expect must have conducted tolerably well, for he married in a McKnitt family that were respected and settled near head of Elk where my father [John Brevard] was born. My father learned the Blacksmith trade with a son of the said William Wallace and in the 30th year of his age married a Jane McWhorter and settled on land near where he was born, there their first child was born, Ephraim, after Doctor Brevard. He [John] then came to North Carolina, Orange County, continued in Hawfields a year or more, there his second child was born-Hugh Brevard, then came on to Head of Rocky River, then Anson County, afterwards Rowan, now Iredell County, where they had 10 children born, with 2 before is 12, 8 sons and 4 daughters."
John Brevard lived six or seven miles east of the present Centre C hurch in Iredell, not far from his brother-in-law Alexander Osborn. His early prominence is attested by the fact that he was appointed both vestryman (though a Presbyterian) and justice of the peace when Anson County was organized in 1749. The former appointment gave him a voice in local matters of charity, education, and religion, the latter in law and government. As a justice he was entitled to be addressed as "Squire." Both he and Osborn retained their offices when Rowan was cut off from Anson in 1753 and were Daniels come to judgment for the Scotch-Irish. The minutes of the Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions are eloquent of their activities. George Davison could have found no more worthy "trusty and well beloved Friends" as guardians for his children. Along with other magistrates, John Brevard owned slaves at an early date and probably also white servants, as there is frequent mention in the court minutes of indentures for them being lengthened because of misdemeanors.
While manifestly not a gentleman of fashion, Squire Brevard was no r ustic. During his membership in the provincial assembly from 1754 to 1760 he had occasion to reside in New Bern, which afforded as good society as North Carolina had to offer. Trade must have taken him both to Philadelphia and to Charlestown, the choicest capitals of the colonies. Perhaps selections from his numerous offspring traveled with him and saw the world. Yet with all his ameliorative advantages, Brevard was a wages-of-sin Calvinist. When one of his slaves committed an unnamed crime, the black was hanged until dead, decapitated, and his head set up in grim warning to others.
