Served with King Henry V in France and it is possible that he fought at t he Battle of Agincourt. James became Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex in 1438 and 1439. A few years later he succeeded to the Barony of Saye and Sele. In 1449, James attained the office of Lord High Treasurer of England, one of the most powerful posts in the land. His triumphant career was then cut short only one year later when, in their attack on London, Jack Cade's rebels caught and killed Lord Saye and Sele. His body was rumoured to have been quartered and the parts nailed up for display at the gates of the city. The title of Saye and Sele still survives and is held at present by a descendant of James Fiennes. [A History of Herstmonceux Castle, p. 4]
His head was set on a spear and borne about London. His son-in-law, Wil liam Cromer, who was Sheriff of Kent, 6 Nov 1444, and "had done grate extorcion ther, as they seid" was beheaded the same day at Mile End. According to another account Cade "made both hedes kisse to gider".
