BIOGRAPHY: Rev: John Owsley born abt 1630 Somersetshire, England, d ied 25 Dec
1687 in Glooston, England. The Rev. John Owsley was probably marrie d in
Whittlebury, England as his first child was born there in 1652. He b ecame Vicar of St. Andrews Church of Stogursey where he remained until 1660 when he became Vicar of the St. John The Baptist Church in Glooston, Leicestershire, England where he remained Vicar until his death in 1687. The Rev. John and his wife Dorothea Poyntz Owsley are buried under the Glooston Church Altar. The OWSLEY FAMILY HISTORICAL SOCIETY of America have helped restore & maintain the Glooston Church through the present day as it was about to be declared redundant in 1978.

He died 25 December 1687 at Glooston, Leicestershire and was buried there. Alumni Oronienses, the matriculation Register of the University of Oxford, 1500-1714, Volume III: 1097, included the following entry:
Ousley, John (Owsle),s. William, of Claypoole, co. Lincoln, Pleb. M agdalen Hall, matric. 20 Oct 1626, aged 18, B.A. 29 June 1631; vicar of Ulceby 1634, and rector of South Stoke, Somerset, 1652, rector of Glooston, co. Leicester, 1661; see Foster's Index Eccl.; father of John 1669.
The above, taken at face value, appears to furnish much of the biog raphical information know on the early life of John Owsley. However, this entry has combined two individuals into one: Rev. John Ouseley, Vicar of Ilceby and Rector of Claypole (South), born in 1608, being the son of William Ouseley of Claypoole, Lincolnshire; and Rev. John Owsley, Rector first of South Stoke (Stogursey) and then of Glooston, born 1630, being the son of John Owsley of Trull, Somersetshire. No reference is made to his duties at Whittlebury Church, Northampstonshire, where he is known to have been in 1651. Although both the Matriculation Registers of the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge made reference to John Owsley of Glooston, neither clearly indicate he attended as a student, let alone graduate.
As a result of upheavals in the church during the Civil War, John O wsley was selected as vicar of Stogursey Parish, Somersetshire on 8 November 1652 to replace Richard Meredith, the vicar since 1628, who was then ejected from his benefice (for facsimilie of appointment, see OFHS Newsletter, Mar 1990, pp. 1-2,20). During his tenure there, the parish records reflect the baptisms of three of his children. In adition, he officiated at four marriages between 1657 and 1659. Upon the restoration of Charles II to the throne, Meredith was restored as vicar and John Owsley was forced to move.
On 15 March 1660, he was inducted as Rector of Glooston Parish,
Leicestershire, having been appointed to that post by Robert, the E arl of
Cardiagn (for transcript of Letters of Recommendation and Appointme nt, see OFHS Newsletter, Sept 1991, p. 75-76). He was the first rector after the
Reformation, having replaced Samuel Smith, a non-conformist, whom R ev. Owsley
referred to as "an intruder." The baptisms of the youngest children o f Rev.
Owsley are recorded in the church registers of Glooston Church, now o n deposit in Lincoln Castle, Lincolnshire.
The burials of Rev. John Owsley and his wife were recorded in the G looston
register by their son-in-law, the Rev. William Owsley, who succeede d is uncle
and faither-in-law as rector. An inscription upon a slab in the cha ncel
against the East end of Glooston Church reads: Here lieth the body o f John
Owsley, who was rector of this parish 28 years, he departed this li fe December the 25th, 1687.
Another inscription upon flat stones reads: Here lieth the bodies o f John
and Dorothea Owsley, who had twelve children. The former deceased D ec. 25, 1687 and the other Aug. 2, 1705.
Rev. John Owsley was married to Dorothea Poyntz, probably in 1650. D orothea was baptised at Benefield, Northamptonshire on 3 January 1632. Their date of marriage has been incorrectly reported as occuring in 1659, as published in John Burke's A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland (London, 1834-1838) and more recently in Burke's Landed Gentry, 18th Edition, Volume 1, 1965, "Poyntz of Tylston Hall." The marriage took place prior to the birth of their elderst child, Sarah, born 8 March 1651, whose baptism was recorded by Rev. Owsley in the records of Whittlebury Church.
In addition, a suit was filed on 26 November 1651 in Chancery relat ive to the property of Newdigate Poyntz and included "John Owsley of Whittlebury,
Northants, Clerk, and Dorothy his wife, one of the daughters of New digate
Poyntz, late of Benefield, Gent., deceased." (For reference to the s uit see

!BIOGRAPHY: An E-Mail received from Milancie Adams 21 Sep 1997 cite s materials compiled by Ann Woodlief. They cite the following:
The line of Dorothea Poyntz is well documented back to the first cl ear
ancestor, Hugh Poinz and wife Hawixia, daughter of Cory Malet in th e early
12th century. Their son Nicholas married Elizabeth Dyall and died 1 272. His
son Hugh Poyntz married Margaret Paveley; their son Nicholas marrie d
Elizabeth, daughter of William de la Zouche. Nicholas served King E dward I
in battle against Prince Llewelyn of Wales, and in 1294 again in ba ttle
against Wales. He was often summoned to fight for the Scots wars in 1 296-7,
and again in 1300. He was frequently summoned to Parliament; he die d around
1307. His son Nicholas was also very active against the Scots, and m arried
(2) Matilda de Acton. At his death he held the manors of Hoo,
Lollynggeston, and Tokinton in Gloucester. Their only son, John Poy ntz (his
mother's heir), called Poyntz of Iron Acton, married Elizabeth de C lanvowe
and died 1376. Robert, his heir (1359-1439) married Katherine Fitz- Nichol
of Hull and Nympsfield. Their son and heir Nicholas, knighted in 14 31 for
Cloucester, had his heir John by Elizabeth Mill. (m. 1); he inherit ed the
manor of Brokenbury. John married Alice Cock, but only survived his f ather
briefly (1450). His heir Robert was Sheriff of Southampton, at firs t
following King Richard III and then Earl of Richmond, being knighte d at the
battle of Redmore after Richard was slain in 1485. He married Marga ret,
illegitimate daughter of Sir Anthony Wydville and Gwentlian Stradli ng. Of
their eight children, two are connected to Dorothy Poyntz: John of A lderley
(m. Margaret Saunders), had William (m. Elizabeth Newdigate), who h ad John
(m. Anne Sydenham, daughter of John Sydenham and Mary Poyntz.) Mary w as
daughter of Nicholas Poyntz and Anne Verney, son of Nicholas Poyntz a nd
Joan Berkeley, son of Anthony Poyntz, 1480-, son and heir of Robert a nd
Margaret). William and Elizabeth Newdigate lived at Woodhatch; he d ied in
1601. These two branches of the family were united when John Poyntz m arried
his cousin Anne Sydenham; she divorced him in 1613 and he sold all h is
property; very likely he went to Jamestown VA, dying around 1617. T heir son
Newdigate Poyntz of Nunny, Co. Somerset, died 1741; he had married S arah
Foxley. Their daughter was our ancestor, Dorothy Poyntz Owsley. And t hat
doesn't even include the lines of Anne Sydenham and Sarah Foxley wh ich
include some interesting names in English history. (Historical and
