Looking for Jancu references in the Moravske Slovacko Region of the Czech Republic and in the Tyrol. At the time my grandmother left Austria the area currently known as Moravske Slovacko was part of the Holy Roman or Austro-Hungarian Empire (I don't have my geo-political history of Austria down yet).
The only factual information I have on VERONICA JANCU besides her name is:
born in 1973
son, Anthony, born in 1887 (may have been Antone or Anton prior to immigtation... there are no other Italian names on her 9 other living children )
marriage to JOHN KASHAY (KASAY, CASEJ) took place between 1885 and 1887
immigration from Vienna to the USA between 1887 and 1900
arrived via Baltimore or Philidelphia
setteled in Mercer, PA
died Sept 10, 1951
unverified family lore:
a female child was left by VERONICA JANCU AND JOHN KASHAY (KASAY, CASEJ) in Austria with VERONICA JANCU's parents... variation on this story: female child traveled to US with Veronica, didn't like it here and was sent back to Austria at her request... this I consider highly improbable because the child in question would have been too young both on arrival in and departure from USA for this story to be true (family fables are not helpful)
more lore:
VERONICA JANCU was of Jewish ancestry. I am totally clueless here concerning her relationship to Jewish forebearers.. I don't think she was more than a generation removed from Judaism and that it is possible her father was Jewish, but not her mother... also pointing to close Jewish cultural heritage is the fact that my grandmother, for a commoner, was uncommonly well educated for a female of her age and time... she was literate; speaking, reading and writing more than two languages... and several Jewish customs were evident in my own family, including the fact that my father, VERONICA JANCU's son, would not eat pork or the meat of any animal with a cloven foot
VERONICA JANCU came from the area that is now the Czech Republic, most likely Slovinia
VERONICA JANCU came from the Austrian Alps (yeah, that's helpful... bare with me, no sense of humor here and I'll give up now)
VERONICA JANCU's father was an itinerent cabinet maker, or else he was a farmer, depending on who's story you want to follow
JOHN KASHAY lore:
born in Vienna, several years older than Veronica (but the US Census for 1900 shows him as born in 1872... and who trusts the early US censuses? they also counted the family twice in 1900 and 1920, under two varients of the name)
JOHN KASHAY (KASAY, CASEJ) was a member of the Austrian Royal Guard and a rider of the Spanish, or Lipizzaner horses prior to their immigration... most likely he was in the military and this has been exagerated... why would a member of the Royal Guard leave such a post? On the other hand, I do know that he had a good seat and hand with horses and looked as if he had been born to ride.
Don't let a good day pass you by. If it's not a good day, know that it too shall pass, as everything does.
