Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON DENT:
The beginning of the trouble was the desire of Perry Christian and his companions: John Lewis, Robert Walters, John Perkins, and C.E.Chamberlain to wreak vengeance on a negro named Frisco who sought safety in the home of George W. Dent's son-in-law, Charley Gates. Three of the gang attacked the house and battered down the door. G.W. Dent and Charley Gates were working in a field when they were in formed of the attack and started fort he scene. When they reached the Gate's house, G.W. Dent ordered the men to leave. Lewis, Walters and Perkins met Dent and Gates and a fight brokeout between the men. G.W. Dent and his son-in-law, got the upper hand on the men. Perry Christian appeared on the scene, for the first time, coming out of the Gate's home. He held a revolver in one hand and a whiskey bottle in the other. He fired four shots at Dent,two which went true to the human target, one hit Dent in his chest. Dent took a step back, reached his right arm out, and moved towards Perry Christian. Christian fired his revolver, hitting Dent between the eyes.Dent staggered for a moment and fell to the ground - dead. This account is from the March 28, 1901, Fayette County, West Virginia, newspaper.
