The memorial service for Robert C. Matthies will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home in Grants Pass. Deacon Jim McVeigh of St. Anne Catholic Church in Grants Pass will officiate. Interment will be at Granite Hill Cemetery in Grants Pass.

Mr. Matthies, 65, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday (July 9, 2002) at Ashland Community Hospital.

He was born July 16, 1936 in New York, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962.

On August 26, 1973, he married Ann Kolling in Las Vegas, Nev.

Mr. Matthies worked in the film industry at MGM Studios in Southern California for several years. After moving to Grants Pass in 1978, he joined the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy where he worked until his retirement in 1996.

Mr. Matthies was a member of the Grants Pass Elks Lodge and a long-time member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting and producing videos.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Robert Irwin, Las Vegas; a daughter, Robin Heinig, Medford; a brother, Albert, New Burn, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
