The memorial service for Dean Surber Axtell will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. July 21 at the American Legion Hall in Grants Pass.
Mr. Axtell, 86, of Grants Pass, died June 19, 2002, at Royale Gardens Health Care Facility in Grants Pass.

He was born Sept. 9, 1915, in Opheim, Mont. The family moved to Grants Pass in 1930. He graduated with honors from Grants Pass High School in 1934 and was involved with the alumni.
Mr. Axtell worked in heavy construction and on the Rim Road project at Crater Lake. He later owned and operated a trucking company. He was an inventor and operated Ready Manufacturing with patents on several items. He was well-known for his work in Korkers.
He served in the Seabees during World War II.
Mr. Axtell was a member of the American Legion and the Early Day Gas Engine Club and was involved with midget racing. He followed the racing circuit and attended the Indianapolis 500 in 1967.
He had traveled extensively around the United States, Alaska and Canada for the past few years with his traveling companion, Millie Chandler, who died in May.
Mr. Axtell enjoyed cribbage, pinochle and poker.
Survivors include four daughters, April Hicks, Central Point, Dina Lilla, Grants Pass, Sharon Hovard, Bandon, and Arlean Trine, Bethel Island, Calif.; a brother, Mark, Grants Pass; a sister, El Rene Dorn, Winter Haven, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Arleta; and a sister, Garnet Blood.
