A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 5, 2002, in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Portland for Joseph Leo Mathie, who died July 2 at age 84. Recitation of the rosary will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 4, in Mt. Scott Funeral Home.

Mr. Mathie was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Portland. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1936 and from the University of Portland in 1940. During World War II, he served in the Navy in the South Pacific. He was an office manager for Oregon Leather. A member of the church, he was its bookkeeper and served on its parish council. In 1949, he married Dorothy E. Van Hoomissen; she died in 1998.

Survivors include his sons, Joe Jr., Jerry, David and Mike; daughters, Susan Gauger and Mary Mathie; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Remembrances to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of his church.
