For the Record: Civil War Veterans Lorenzo Dow WELLMAN (1836-1916)and Sylvanus Llewellyn WHITMORE (1840-1923) homesteaded in the Walmut/Venus Vicinity of Knox County in 1879. The Wellmans came from Fayette Co., IA; the Whitmores, from Rutland Co., VT. Their children, Henry Ward Wellman (1860-1945)and Helen Ardell Whitmore (1864-1953), married 1-1-1891, had five children born at Venus, two d.y. Surviving were Lorenzo S. Wellman (1897-1979), Henry W. Wellman Jr. (1899-1991), Henrietta Wellman Smith (1901-2003), and William A. Wellman (1903-2001) The pioneer grandmothers were Caroline Roberts Wellman (1838-1886) born in Marshall Co., IL, and Octavia Parks Whitmore (1842-1911) born in Rutland Co., VT.
