Hearing the Human Encyclopedia: Developing and Practicing Oral History with Michelle Johnson
Any one person carries within them a wide range of experiences that inevitably link them to larger collective stories. When we hear the words of the retired teacher, the clerk at the grocery store, the man next door, the teenager we may or may not know, uncle or mother-in-law, we always gain insight, not only about that person, but also about the fabric of our worlds.
Over the 8-week session, participants will engage in foundational questions of oral history inquiry. An introduction to methods of gathering oral histories, with a particular emphasis on listening, will be presented. Participants will individually and collectively determine what they want to gather, who they hear from and what they do with the information they learn.
