Crawfordsville Journal Review, Friday, Sept 20, 1935 Nathan L. Graham Dies In New York Prominent Circus Official and Former Resident Passes Away Nathan L. (Lew) Graham, former local resident passed away at a Middleton, New York hospital on Thursday, Sept. 19, according to word received here today by friends. His death followed an extended illness. Mr. Graham was a familiar figure in the circus world for many years and was identified prominently with the Barnum & Bailey, Wallace & Hagenback, and Ringling Brothers shows. He was about 68 years old and was born in this city. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Graham, the father having been a pioneer merchant of Crawfordsville. Mr. Graham spent his boyhood here and at the age of 14 joined a circus band with the Barnum & Bailey shows. He continued in the circus business until a few years ago when his health failed and he was forced to retire. Mr. Graham had many close friends in this city and visited here frequently after becoming prominent in the show world. Most of his visits were at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Divine, parents of Mrs. Blanche Harding. Four sisters, Mrs. John Courtney, Mrs. Matie West, Mrs. Lettie West and Miss Lucy Graham, preceded him in death. Surviving are a nephew, Robert Courtney, and a neice, Mrs. Mary Courtney Merrell. Lew Graham, Circus Side Show Manager and Big Top Announcer; "BandWagon" Circus Magazine. 1913 - Lew Graham was side show manager and made all the announcements in big show; Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth Season. 1922 - The Muse brothers were catapulted into big top royalty when they were "discovered" by Lew Graham, the legendary Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus sideshow manager. 1931 - Lew Graham was without a doubt the greatest announcer that ever stepped into a circus tent. He was in a class by himself. He is the only one I ever knew who could walk into that center ring of Ringling Brothers mammoth circus tent and make himself heard... 4. Lucy Graham 5. They had a son named Robert Courtney & a daughter named Mary Courtney who married John Merrell.
