Unable to find Ralph with his mother on any census. My suggestion would be to use the Familysearch.org catalog and obtain the 1885 Iowa state census for Polk county, and view it at your local LDS (Mormon) Family History Center. However, if you can't also get an index for this census, it could take a looooong time to scroll through a microfilm of Polk County.
