My mother just passed away this year, May 21, 2002. She had always told me that we had Cherokee and Black Dutch on her father's side Charlie Franklin Russell, and Cherokee and French on her mother's side Walter Jack Duvall.
The following is currently our First Generation on my grandfather's side. James Brownloe Russell and Nancy Caroline Hill moved to Alabama no-later-than 1828 because they were married there; check Tuscaloosa Co. AR marriages. They had 17 children in all. I remember my mother's almost jet black hair and light brown eyes, some people would mistaken her for being hispanic because of her hair, eyes, and skin color. She was 4'11" and went to a one room school house somewhere in Atkins or Morrilton AR back in the 1940s. Her mom and dad owned land and farmed it until they sold it, (I think to the government) and moved to California, (the land is now a state park), (mom couldn't recollect the name of it). I still have cousins in Arkansas, one I met on a site like this one, except bigger (more commercialized). I know one thing is for sure, we were dirt poor when I was growing up. I am still checking records and think I have found some significant data to prove Cherokee links, but can't say for sure. I am not so much interested in being able to prove I am cherokee by blood; I am more in interested in knowing who my ancestors were, and how I came into being.
JAMES BROWNLOE RUSSELL was born Abt. 1809 in NC. or SC., (Note* Farmer w/1500 acres; check Coosa County, Hatchet District, 1850 Alabama Census); listed with Nancy and children), died October 22, 1875 in Pope Co. More on LOIS LOUVENIA RUSSELL:
When she was 13-yrs old, gave birth to JIMMY DALE RUSSELL out of wedlock (on grandma's and my mother's recollection of the account, my momma was raped by her school teacher, who later apologized to my grandma, swaring it was my momma's that he raped her. Grandma always held shaming the family against my mom (Lois), and my mom had to live with that shame for the rest of her life.
HEALTH INFO ON LOIS LOUVENIA RUSSELL (my mom, like her mom Stella Duvall-Russell, was a diabetic type II; they both survived bladder cancer, and they both had a bleeding ulcer. Unlike her mother, my mom survived her bleeding ulcer, but later in 1996 had her right leg amputated (just below the knee because of a diabetic ulcer that developed behind one of her toes and got seriously infected). Another diabetic complication was her hypertension (high blood pressure), I can remember seeing her systolic pressure being over 200 a couple of times. My mom also had kidney failure and was on renal dialysis from 1999 to 2002. She died the morning of May 21, 2002 at home while talking to my brother Johnny, who was there to take care of her during those last few months of her life. He recalls her sitting on the side of her bed, looking out her French-door into the garden, and commenting on her pretty miniature red roses he had planted for earlier in the year. She told him she was proud of him and then died almost instantly while sitting on the side of the bed looking out at her garden. Her death was due to diabetic complications: Cogestive Heart Failure, (common cause of death amoung diabetics).

More on Carl Glen Thompson:
My mom, Lois L. Russell had rare blood; RH-Negative. I believe this to be the cause of Carl Glen's death, due to the fact that my mom's RH-Neg blood almost caused the death of William Lee Thompson (nickname Pete). I remember in the early 1960s when I was just a kid of abt 6 years old, my mom, Lois, running out of the house with little Pete in her arms, screaming for the nieghbor to take her to the hospital with Pete, At the hospital Pete received an emergency blood transfusion. My mom was pregnant 13 times while married to Vernon Thompson, but only 8 children survived because of my mom's rare blood type.

John Thompson was considered the black-sheep of the family. My mom went for years wondering if he was dead or alive. Usually abt every 5 years or so, he would contact momma, just to let her know that he was indeed still alive, but unfortunately his calls usually came from a jail cell. In the last year of momma's life, Johnny cleaned himself up, started reading the bible, and was taking presciption Zoloft to treat depression. John Thompson last known living in CA June, 2002, he may have possibly gone back to Florida or Tenn where he spent considerable time.

More on Virginia Ann Thompson:
We had a hard time growing up. Vernon was a drunk and a woman chaser who beat my mom Lois, and I believe us kids too. I remember being 3 or 4 years old watching my dad hit my mom, but at the time I perceived them to be dancing. I remember him holding a can of beer in his hand while my mom ran off to the bathroom crying with a bloody lip. She told me and my sister Mary Beth that she was okay, as she ran the water in the bathroom sink. Well I guess things must of got real bad, because a short time after that all of us kids were halled off to a foster home somewhere in Florida. Our foster mother, old lady blackheader, or a name something like that use to torture me and my sister by locking us up in an outside shed and other things that should not be publicized. I wish I could find that woman, and tell her what an evil person she was to us, so she would know that we never forgot the scar she left for us to carry. After the abuse, we were put in a 2nd foster home with a nice young couple. Shortly thereafter my mom came and took us away to CA. where we were raised. My mom was a good soul for wanting to keep us with her (she could have abandoned us in that foster home, some parents do that to their children). No, she wasn't like that, at 4'11", she was a strong woman with courage and an enormous amount of pride. And lines were drawn clear with her, she either liked you, or she didn't.
My mom took me early on out to the fields to work blockin cotten and such, while living in San Juaquin Valley, CA. I discovered through genealogy that my ancestry-line was nothing but farmers. That experience taught me that I didn't want to live a life in poverty, sweat, and work.
After I left my 1st husband, I moved in with my parents and made arrangements with momma to watch my boy Daniel, who was abt 4 years old at the time, so I could get out of that farming town and make a better life for myself and my son. I joined the U.S.Air Force. I spent almost 9 years fighting for my rights as a woman, as a firefighter, and as a non-commissioned officer. It wasn't easy, it was challenging and finally I just gave up and threw in the towel.
9 yr-Veteran, US Air Force.
As of 2002 I am happily living in State of MD and working for the US Government as one of their HRSA Scholars. I have recently benn selected as part of a think-tank workgroup, responsible for the restructuring and formation of a new government office in Rockville, MD. I see that some of the streets here are named Russell, Duvall, and Thompson. I haven't seen any Davis's yet, but I am sure they are here. A matter of fact, I just discovered that the elderly woman living right next door to me is named Virginia Thompson. I found out because the post-man had given my mail to the nieghbor thinking that the mail was addressed wrong, because the nieghbor was a Virginia Thompson, also.
