My G-grandfather Moses Williams was born in 1843 in Virginia according to census records. He is listed uniformly as mullato (generally 1/4 black in those days). No states are listed for his parents' birthplaces, so I assume he was born a slave. He married Parmalee abt. 1875. She was born in TX, and also listed as mulatto, as were their children. Interestingly, on one census they had a black maid living with them. Now, Moses and Parmalee's daughter Addy (also Lowattie and Attie) had been listed as mulatto, but when she grew up and married my grandfather William A. Harris, from then on she was listed as white. The family story was that she was part Indian (they married in Creek Township, OK). Also that our line went back to Roger Williams (of RI). I would be interested in any information regarding Moses, particularly, but also in any descendants of Roger Williams who were slaveholders in Virginia in the 1840s. Thanks!
