Here is all I know about my Reading family.

I am Brian Reading, born in Stockton-on-Tees on 28th January 1936, now living since 1999 with my New Zealand wife Candice at 97b Runciman Road, Pukekohe, New Zealand. email reading@ihug.co.nz

My great grandfather was John Ebenezer Reading, born 14th November 1828. He was reputedly had an iron foundry in the east end of London. On 24th July 1853 he married Sarah Jane Lovett on her 21st birthday, born 24th July 1832. They had 10 children of whom three died in their infancy. (This information comes from a copy he made from the family bible on May 26th 1890 which I have). The surviving children were

Agnes born 12th April 1854 – (pretty soon after their marriage, two weeks less than 9 months but too close to 9 months to be a forced marriage.)

John William Born 15th February 1856

Henry Born 22 February 1858 -- my grandfather who married Annie?

Fanny Born 5th May 1861

Frank     Born 15th February 1865

Walter     Born 15th August 1870

Jessie     Born 8th May 1872

Henry Reading had four sons. My father John William Reading was the third son, born on 14th January 1897. One brother died of TB, two were killed in the 1914-18 war. His younger brother, Wilf?, was killed in 1918 and I have visited his grave. Died 5th September 1918. They served in the Kensingtons. Father survived, in France, Salonika and then with Allenby in Palestine. His father Henry died in the 1918-19 ’flu epidemic. His mother, Annie, died in circa 1938. In 1918 they lived at 89 South Esk Road, Forest Gate.

John William married Victoria Maud Hughes on 19th April 1930 at the Congregational Church in Chester Road East Ham. She was born on 30th October 1900. They went to live in Stockton-on-Tees until father retired in 1958 and moved to Tunbridge Wells. Father Died in 1974 and Mother in 1981 aged 80.

I had one brother, Norman Reading who died when he was 48 in 1982.

By a previous marriage I have three sons. Simon born 1974, single, living in Rickmansworth. Jonathan (1976) married to Sue and living in Halifax. Jacob (1978), single living in Sandhurst. Jonathan and Sue have three children – Maisy (1996), Max (1998) and Mitchel (14th January 2002).

Father had no living brothers or sisters but plenty of cousins. Because we lived in the north of England I never got to know them. We gave my mother an 80th birthday party on 30th October 1980. From the invitation list that I still have there are three Reading relatives.
