I found the information pasted at the bottome of this message in the Rootsweb Merry List archives.
The Calvin Merry who married Isabella Hanks was born in 1765 and could not have been the son of Cornelius and Anna J. "Sullivan" Merry. Calvin was the brother of the Cornelius mentioned in the article. They were sons of Deacon Cornelius and Susanna "Wainwright" Merry.
Calvin Merry was first married to Agnes MAY 2 Aug 1797 Hardin Co., KY. It is believed that Agnes was the daughter of David & Mary MAY. I don't know what happened to Agnes "May" Merry. I've only found records of one child, a son named Festus, born to them.
Isabella Hanks was a widow, having been married to Peter Hanks, IV and by whom she had 9 children . Peter Hanks was killed in the battle of Tippecanoe 7 Nov 1811. Isabella's maiden name was Stewart but I have not located her family at this time. She & Calvin Merry married 6 Sep 1812 Knox Co. IN. They left that area and settled in Hempstead Co., AR where they had one daughter c1816, Juliet G. Merry, who was my gg grandmother.
By 1830 Isabella had left Calvin Merry in AR, taking Juliet with her, and moved to San Augustine Co., TX where some of her Hanks sons had settled. I have no record of a divorce or why she left Mr. Merry in AR. She resumed the use of the Hanks surname in Texas, receiving a land grant there in the name of Isabella Hanks.
Calvin Merry is found in Hempstead Co., as early as Apr 1820. He is last found in the home of his son, Festus, in 1850 Montgomery Co., AR. He is not listed in the 1860 census and presumed deceased.
In the mid to late 1820s (Hempstead Co., AR) Calvin Merry is named guardian to Sarah Bassett, William Bassett, Thomas Bassett and Cassander Bassett, minor children of Nathaniel Bassett. I have not been able to determine his relationship, if any, to the Bassett family.
Any thoughts or additional information will be appreciated.
