Claude Maxfield was the first child of Edwin Francis and Mary E (Cutts) Maxfield. Edwin Maxfield was born in Goshen, NH 25 June 1852. He was a farmer and railroad section man, and lived mostly in Newbury and Sunapee, NH. Edwin married Mary Bentley in March 1880 in Wisconsin, either in the town of Wyocena or Springvale. She was born 23 February 1860, daughter of Andrew Bentley. Edwin died 12 July 1919 in Sunapee and is buried in North Goshen cemetery. Mary died 28 May 1923 in Newbury, NH and is buried in North Goshen.
Edwin and Mary had 9 children:
1. Claude Bentley, born 18 August 1881 probably Goshen, NH. He married Irene Page from somewhere in Vermont. They had no children. Claude was a graduate of Dartmouth College in NH, was a lawyer and later a judge in West Haven, Connecticut, where he died 22 May 1952. His wife died in 1956 in West Haven.
2. Florence Eva, born 21 May 1888, in Goshen and died 10 September 1952 in Newport, NH.
3. Bertha Josephine, born 2 February 1890, in Goshen and died 25 July 1895, in Sunapee, of Diptheria.
4. Fred, born 16 July 1891, in Sunapee.
5. Mary Tamar, born 14 August 1893, in Sunapee, and died 28 July 1895, in Sunapee, of Diptheria. (Three days after her sister, Bertha)
6. Helen, born 3 August 1896 in Sunapee. She married of C. W. Thompson of Newport, NH. She died in Newport 6 August 1916.
7. Percy R., born 16 August 1897 in Sunapee. He was a veteran of World War I. He was a shoecutter in Newport, NH. He married Marion J. Luman, 22 November 1922, and they had 1 child, Josephine Mary who was born in Newport, NH. Percy and Marion were divorced. He died in New York City...date not known.
8. Stillborn female, 17 February 1900, in Sunapee.
9. Mildred L., born 8 January 190l, in Sunapee. She married Bartlett. She died in 1965 in Newport, NH.
The Maxfield family descended from John Maxfield of Salisbury, MA in the 1600's.
