Edward J. Matchett came to the US from Belfast in 1863. He arrived in Maine and was hired to fight for someone else in the 16th Maine Regiment, Co. G. After the civil war he ended up in Western Wisconsin where he had a contracting business building roads, bridges and railroads. He was 17 when he joined the 16th Maine and may have been the flag bearer. This is my grandfather and I am trying to find out more about his civil war years and his activites thereafter.
