Looking for relatives of my great grandmother Minnie Elnora Jones. Her death certificate says she was born in Jacksonville, Kemper County, Mississippi on July 15th, 1881. She died 12/14/1963 in Keene (near Bakersfield), California. Her father was Jackson P. Jones born 11/17/1861 in Mississippi, died 10/9/1910. Her mother was Rachel Caroline Owen(s) born 9/5/1865 in Mississippi, died 7/25/1928. J.P. and Rachel were married on 8/17/1880.
Minnie was the oldest of 20 children. In 1963, when Minnie died, her brother Joe Malton Jones born 8/26/1901 was living in Pheonix, Arizona. Her brother Hugh Miles Jones born 12/19/1897, was living in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her brother Pinkney Franklin 'Frank' Jones born 11/17/1899, was living in Erick, Oklahoma as was Minnie's sister Onnie Pearl (Jones) Ream born 1/27/1895. Minnie's other surviving sisters were Florence Ella (Jones) Williams born 10/24/1886, living in Roswell, New Mexico, Myrtle Lea (Jones) Coley born 10/10/1891, living in Anaheim, California, Cammie Atlie (Jones) Manning born 3/23/1893, living in Healdsburg, California and, Anna Rachel Ida (Jones) La Follette was living in Northridge, California.
Minnie married James Charles Cordell born 3/17/1864 in Weatherford, Texas, died 3/29/1949 in Bakersfield, California. James Cordell's parents were John Cordell and Florenza Cheney.
James and Minnie were married February 16th, 1896 in Jacksboro, Jacks County, Texas. The 1910 census taken April 15th, has them living in Browder Township, Jefferson County, Oklahoma. Their children were Burley G. Cordell, son, 12yrs, born in Oklahoma; Talmadge Pinkney Cordell, son, 9yrs, born in Oklahoma; Bertha Rachel Cordell, daughter, 7yrs, born in Oklahoma; John Euales Cordell, son, 5yrs, born in Oklahoma; Leslie M. (Lillie) Cordell, daughter, 1yrs, born in Oklahoma; Florinza Cheney, mother, 92yrs, born in MS.
Their son Phelmon James Cordell was born in Oklahoma 8/27/1915.
J.C. Cordell was a shoe maker. He had a shoe shop located next door to Hatcher Land Company in Lindsay, Oklahoma, (late 20's - early 30's), and at some point he had a shop in Shamrock, Texas.
Most of the J.C. and Minnie Cordell family ended up in the Bakersfield / Delano / Mc Farland area of California. Their son John Euales Cordell shows up on the 1930 census as living in Detroit, Michigan with his wife Nova Cordell and their two sons L.C. Cordell, 1 yrs, and Olan Cordell, 4 1/2 yrs. At some point though, the family was living somewhere in the vicinity of Bakersfield, California (possibly Tehachapi), because my father told me he used to go visit Nova after Euales died.
J.C. and Minnie's daughter Lillie (Cordell) Wynn / Stephenson, was living in San Jose, California in 1963 but, at some point after that she was living back in Oklahoma.
My grandmother was J.C. and Minnie Cordell's daughter, Bertha Rachel Cordell born 5/11/1903 in Marlow, Stephens County, Oklahoma, died 10/18/1979 in Bakersfield, California. Thanks to Bertha's daughter Bernice Lillian (Wagoner) Morgan born 3/16/1929, and her husband Wayne Morgan, I was able to obtain pictures of most of the family I've mentioned above dating from the mid 1890's to the early 1930's. I would love to share them with other family members.
