My gg-grandfather, JAMES EDWARD HAVILAND, went to the Republic of TX in 1838 on a land grant of 320 acres and settled in Galveston, TX. His nativity has been reported as: England, Maryland, and Savannah, Georgia, and he was born between 1811 and 1813. He built and commanded the first iron steamboat in TX in 1842 and was elected mayor of Galveston twice during the Reconstruction period after the Civil War.
He was married to JANE COCHRANE of Quebec, Canada and had the following children: Elizabeth b.1848, James b. 1850, Forster Gale b. 1858 and Clarissa b. 1868. He died in Galveston on August 7, 18869.
I need more information on his antecedents and would appreciate a response if anyone has anything at all.
