I live in Nova Scotia, and our family has traced a number of our family lines back to Europe. Most branches of the family were Highland Clearances people, who arrived in NS on the Hector in the mid-1700's
We understand that the Geddes name of our direct line came from a Scottish pike-like fish (Ged) and that Geddis, Geddie, Gaddis and like names originated from that base.
We also understood that our direct line were lowlanders who moved into the Highlands of Scotland and then were sent abroad as part of the Clearances.
I grew up in a river valley that was settled by Clearance Scots, primarily, and there are still eight or ten Geddes families in the valley. Our grandfather was William Geddes, and one brother was Truman Geddes, both born in Nova Scotia.
