Vivian grew up in Carmel, Penobscot, Maine and as a teenager removed with his family to Belfast, Waldo, Maine and Searsport, Waldo, Maine. He was a farmer, a brick layer and a mill worker. Early he enjoyed photography and making violins and other crafts. Later he enjoyed painting with oils and he always loved fishing.
Evangeline grew up in Madison and met Vivian in Searsport while on vacation there. While courting Vivian would ride his bicycle the 70 miles of muddy roads to Madison to visit Evangeline. Evangeline was a very refined frail woman and a devoted homemaker. She enjoyed swimming, writing letters and spending time with her grandchildren.
Vivian and Evangeline raised their family in Searsport and later removed to the Washburn family residence in Madison where they lived the remainder of their lives.
