My ancestors, John and Elizabeth Clayton, came from England, settled in the Isle of Wight County Virginia as a lawyer and gentleman farmer, in the late 1600's. Over the next two centuries, the family migrated through the deep South (esp. Mississippi). One of the sons, George Washington Clayton, came to Runnels County, Texas and became a landowner. His oldest daughter, Dorintha Salone Clayton was my great-great grandmother. George W. Clayton eventually left Runnels County, and moved to Abilene, Texas, where he became one of the first grocerymen in Abilene.
