Now have some additional information:
Thomas J. Clark was b. about 1825 in Alabama and died before 1880. Martha Lavonia Clapp was b. abt 1827 in Madison Co., Alabama. Besides William Monroe Clark (my gggrandfather), they had a daughter Sally.

Thomas and Martha are found on the 1870 Federal Census in Liberty Co., Texas, where son William Monroe Clark was born. Thomas paid a "poll tax" in 1865, 1866 and 1870 in Liberty County, Texas. He was not listed on the 1880 Census with Martha L. Clark in Liberty County, TX.

Thomas' father was J.D. Clark, and J.D. had another son, Lommie G. Clark.

A cousin believes Thomas J. might have been married to a Hester Ann (MNU) before Martha and had a son named Thomas.
